Module 1: Ultrasound-Guided Intravenous Cannulation
Learning Outcomes
You will learn:
- When and why to use ultrasound for IV access
- Indications, contraindications, and safety principles
- How to recognise high-risk patients and when to escalate
Ultrasound Fundamentals & Vein Identification
- Probe selection and image optimisation
- Upper-limb vascular anatomy
- How to differentiate veins from arteries
Cannulation Technique & Procedural Steps
- In-plane and out-of-plane approaches
- Needle alignment, angle, and depth control
- Infection prevention and preparation
Hands-On Practical Skills Stations
You’ll practise:
- Cannulation on simulation models
- Repetition with instructor feedback
- Managing collapsed, rolling, and difficult veins
Module 2: Learning Outcomes
Airway Emergencies & Assessment
- Identify common causes of airway emergencies
- Recognise signs of airway compromise
- Perform a structured airway assessment
- Apply clinical observation to decision-making
Basic Airway Manoeuvres
- Perform head-tilt chin-lift and jaw thrust
- Select and insert OPA correctly
- Select and insert NPA appropriately
- Understand indications and contraindications
BVM Ventilation (Hands-on)
- Set up BVM and choose correct mask size
- Perform effective one-person BVM technique
- Perform coordinated two-person BVM technique
- Identify and correct common ventilation issues
Supraglottic Airways (I-Gel) (Hands-on)
- Understand indications and limitations of I-Gel
- Select correct size and insert safely
- Confirm placement and secure device
- Apply skills in supervised practice
Cricothyroidotomy (Awareness))
- Understand the CICO scenario
- Recognise when escalation is required
- Understand basic principles of cricothyroidotomy
- Gain awareness of emergency airway options
Team-Based Approach & Integration
- Apply Zero Point Survey principles
- Use structured communication in emergencies
- Choose appropriate airway adjuncts in scenarios
- Understand escalation pathways in urgent care
