Module 1: Ultrasound-Guided Intravenous Cannulation

Learning Outcomes

You will learn:

  • When and why to use ultrasound for IV access
  • Indications, contraindications, and safety principles
  • How to recognise high-risk patients and when to escalate

Ultrasound Fundamentals & Vein Identification

  • Probe selection and image optimisation
  • Upper-limb vascular anatomy
  • How to differentiate veins from arteries

Cannulation Technique & Procedural Steps

  • In-plane and out-of-plane approaches
  • Needle alignment, angle, and depth control
  • Infection prevention and preparation

Hands-On Practical Skills Stations

You’ll practise:

  • Cannulation on simulation models
  • Repetition with instructor feedback
  • Managing collapsed, rolling, and difficult veins

Module 2: Wound Closure & Suturing Workshop

Learning Outcomes

You will learn:

  • Wound assessment and classification
  • Contamination and timing considerations
  • When to close, leave open, or refer

Equipment, Materials & Preparation

  • Suture and needle types
  • Instrument selection
  • Local anaesthetic and sterile preparation

Closure Techniques – Theory & Demonstration

You will learn:

  • Simple interrupted, continuous, mattress sutures
  • Skin glue, adhesive strips, and staples
  • Technique selection based on wound type

Hands-On Practical Suturing Stations

You’ll practise:

  • Suturing on tissue models
  • Spacing, eversion, bite depth, and alignment
  • Closure of irregular wounds
